William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner Sr. is a character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. His first appearance is in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), though he appears primarily in later installments.
He was a member of Captain Jack Sparrow's crew aboard the Black Pearl until he defended Sparrow against Captain Barbossa when Barbossa lead a mutiny. Barbossa punished him by strapping him to a cannon and throwing him overboard.
Because of a pirate curse, Bootstrap Bill could not die. He eventually washed ashore on the Flying Dutchman, where he was forced into servitude by Davy Jones. Over time, he began to physically merge with the ship itself, becoming a grotesque member of Jones' crew. His character arc explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the corrupting influence of power.
